The wonderful aroma of cacao, maple syrup and oats baking wafted out of the kitchen. The aroma reached two weary teenagers, they followed the scent and it brought them directly to a pan of granola cooling on the stove top. They each got instant gratification when they reached for those wonderful clumps of granola. Yes! 2 hearty thumbs up!!
One of the key ingredients in this recipe is the powdered cacao. My favorite brand is Dagoba organic Cacao. It is worth every extra penny to buy this rich unrefined powdered cacao bean. If you are not acquainted with the unrefined version of cacoa, you will enjoy a few facts on the benefits of raw cacao.
5 Incredible Benefits of Raw Cacao

Buy the Ingredients here! (We buy Bob’s Red Mill oats, flaxmeal, & chia seeds. Dagoba Organic Cacao is the best on the market.)
Cacao Granola is an excellent snack! It can be eaten plain or you can add a milk or your choice. (I use unsweetened coconut milk.)
Do you need a portable snack idea? Place 1 c. of granola in a jelly canning jar. (When my daughters were younger, they loved to place a sticker on the top of jar to identify it as their snack.)
I encourage you to gather the ingredients, and try your first batch of high energy granola!

High Energy Cacao Granola
- 3 c. Organic Gluten-free Old Fashioned Oats
- 1 c. Organic shredded coconut
- 1/4 c. Chia Seeds
- 1/4 c. Flaxmeal
- 1/4 c. Raw Sunflower seeds
- 1/8 c. Organic raw cacao
- 1/4 c. Organic coconut sugar
- 1 tsp. Pure vanilla extract
- 1/4 c. Organic butter, melted
- 1/4 c. Pure maple syrup
- 3 T. Water
Preheat oven to 350°. Place dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. Mix by hand with a whisk or spatula. Line a baking sheet with unbleached parchment paper. Pour the dry ingredients onto the parchment paper. Spread out evenly.
In a small saucepan, melt the butter. Remove from the heat and add maple syrup and water. Immediately pour evenly over the dry ingredients mixture. Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Stir. Bake another 15 minutes. Granola should begin to brown and clump together before removing from the oven.
Cool on a wire rack. Stir the granola to have more clumps form.
Once it is completely cool, store in an airtight container. (I find using canning jars works well.) The granola stores in the pantry for up to a week, and the refrigerator for several weeks. Enjoy!
