Essential oils are one of the easiest introductions to natural or clean living. You can purchase sample bottles or buy them in singles. One term you’ll learn is “pulse points” means apply the oil to the inside of your wrists, that is where the oil can easily be absorbed by your body.
Orange Essential Oil.
This is my one of “go-to” oils when I need a bit more energy. It’s a fresh clean smell that is smells like citrus. Orange oil can also be called sweet orange. It’s most commonly extracted from the “blood orange” which is a combination of pomelo and mandarins.
Orange Oil Benefits:
- uplifting and energy giving
- relieves inflammation
- antiseptic & healing to the skin
- reduces gas
- boosts your mood
- relieves fatigue
- promotes digestion
How to use Orange Oil: Apply a 1-2 drops in the palm of your hand and inhale. Apply it directly or with a carrier oil to the back of your neck (for energy & mood boosts) or your stomach area (for relief from gas or ease digestion). It makes a great oil to diffuse in a room. This oil can be applied to the bottoms of the feet and pulse points.

Sandalwood Essential Oil.
This oil comes from the roots of the East Indian sandalwood tree. It has a pleasant fresh evergreen scent. You’ll see this oil in soap, lotions, deodorants, and facial cleansers. Sandalwood is one of the more expensive oils for many reasons. Two reasons for the high price tag is the purest form is harvested from India and it takes up to 80 years for this tree to grow before the roots can be harvested.
Sandalwood Oil Benefits:
- Focus & mental clarity
- Relieves stress and anxiety
- Natural toner for our skin (tightens and cleanses the skin)
- Reduce inflammation (especially due to skin conditions like acne)
- Natural treatment for coughs and respiratory issues
How to use Sandalwood Oil: Add a few drops to your pulse points or the back of your neck for focus and stress reduction. Great in homemade skin care products, add a 2-3 drops to soap, lotions and cleansers. Add 2-3 drops to warm water for a soothing foot soak. Diffuse in your room to relieve a cough.

Lavender Essential Oil.
One of the most widely known and used essential oils is lavender oil. You’ll find it in soap, lotions, shampoo, body sprays, candles, and cleaners. Lavender requires a special distilling technique to get a quality essential oil. This oil is definitely the most versatile oil to have on hand.
Benefits of Lavender Oil:
- relaxing muscles
- calming
- air freshening
- promotes healthy hair and scalp
- relieves nausea
- reduced skin inflammation (especially from bug bites)
How to Use Lavender Oil: Apply a drop to a mosquito bite or other bug bites. Keep a spray bottle with lavender oil and a carrier oil mix handy for spraying on hair, itchy scalps, and to freshen the room. Add 2-3 drops to a diffuser for relaxing. For instant calm; add a drop to the palm of your hand and inhale.
Note: Due to lavender oils popularity, you’ll see many imitation or fake lavender oils. Two ingredients you’ll want to make sure is not in pure lavender oil is alcohol and “natural scents”.
Tea Tree Essential Oil.
Also known as melaleuca. Tree tree oil is extracted from the melaleuca plant which is native to Australia. This is the very first oil I used before I even knew of essential oils.
Benefits of Tree Tree Oil:
- kills bacteria and viruses
- repels insects
- antiseptic for wound care
- use to wash produce; as it eliminates mold
- treats most varieties of nail fungus
- reduces inflammation
- soothes sunburnt skin
How to Use Tea Tree Oil: It’s important to mix a carrier oil with tea tree oil, as it can irritate the skin, before using. Tea tree oil works great mixed with lavender oil and fractionated coconut oil for an anti fungal spray. You can add a few drops to your mop before cleaning your floors. I add approximately 10 drops to a load of laundry for extra cleaning. It even works well to clean your washing machine.

Where to Buy Essential Oils?
Before jumping on a trend, I do a little homework, and this time it was on essential oils. One area I checked into was what companies grow and sell authentic essential oils. I do believe they’re a few companies that sell essential oils that have been harvested and distilled properly, however I chose to go with Young Living.
Young Living came highly recommended to me by several friends and it was also the brand used by the Naturopathic Institute in our town. I love that I can buy directly from this company, they tell you where and when the oils are sourced, and make a priority to provide quality oils.
The biggest issues with buying essential oils: diluting oils, poor harvesting, extracting practices or mimicking the real oils with artificial scents. You’re welcome to use my Young Living distributor code to buy directly from the company at either retail or wholesale prices.
Trust is essential when purchasing any natural remedies. Essential oils are no different. As essential oils grow in popularity we’ll see more and more “fake oils.” It will be harder to tell what is authentic and what is not. The biggest problem is fake oils will not heal.
I hope you enjoyed reading about orange oil, tea tree oil, lavender oil, and sandalwood oil. How do you use these oils?
